The Indiana Black Expo has been taking place in Indiana for over 40 years. It began as a way to establish a positive reflection of African-Americans in the community during the Post Civil Rights Movement. After attending an expo in Chicago, several religion and civic leaders decided to create an expo for Indiana. In 1970, the Indiana Black Expo was born and for four decades, it has given civic leaders a platform to speak about pressing economic, political, and social issues that African-Americans have faced in past, currently face, and will face in the future. The Expo has been supported by African-Americans such as Jesse Jackson, Louis Farrakhan, and Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds, as well as many others.
The mission of the Indiana Black Expo is "to be an effective voice and vehicle for the social and economic advancement of African-Americans." Their vision is "that African-American youth and families achieve their highest potential and reflect pride in their ethnicity." Their promise is that the Expo "celebrates cultural diversity and inclusiveness across all races, ethnicity, nationalities, generations, socioeconomic levels and religious affiliations. We continue to strive for excellence by providing unique events and programs which reflect the changing landscape of Indiana and the world. Our commitment to excellence through personal enhancement and community development exemplify our dedication to improving the quality of life for all."
