Tablet Rentals at a Baseball Game?

Los Angeles Angels tablet rentalsThe tablet industry has really been booming recently thanks to the iPad 2 and some very good competitors running the Android platform like the Samsung Galaxy Tab. With the hype in the technology industry growing in terms of tablets, it is no surprise that the technology rental industry has also seen an influx of tablet rentals. Tablet rentals are becoming as popular as laptop rentals and desktop rentals, but one outlet for tablet rentals may have taken the concept a little too far.

According to a press release, T-Mobile will soon begin offering a tablet rental service to attendees of any Los Angeles Angels home game. Yeah, you read that right, tablet rentals at a baseball game. For the lowly sum of only $10, you can rent a tablet that gives you access to:

  1. 1. Free game-day program that has been optimized for watching it on a tablet.

  2. Free content from the Zinio magazine app including the ability to read from a sampling of magazines during the game that includes ESPN.

  3. Free T-Mobile TV (only available on the T-Mobile G-Slate) that provides content from popular TV shows. All of the regular free content, including the "Select" package, which is normally $4.99, will be available as part of the game-day tablet rental.

  4. Access to T-Mobile's network that allows for fast video chat sessions and download speeds.

This seems like a cool concept, and definitely a good deal for only $10, though it does seem a little ridiculous and unnecessary. One of the best things about going to a game is leaving everything else behind. Why pay money to go to a game if you are just going to watch it on a tablet? Stay at home and save your money. And if you are going to go as far as to use a tablet then you might as well just bring your own.

Tablet rentals are definitely a good business venture for technology companies but only if the market in which they are renting seems worth it and to me, this doesn't seem like one of them. If you are going to rent technology, then do it at places where you really need it, like conventions or conferences, not baseball games. And while we are on the subject, don't bother taking your own tablet to the game either. Go to the game for the game. Sit back, relax, eat a ballpark frank, drink a cold beer and enjoy yourself, like the good ol' days.
